Hi!

Welcome to The HomeGrown Farm, where chickens roam free. No cages, no barns, no heavy stocking density.

Take a look at the website background… that’s our farm on a gorgeous Autumn morning, where the girls are all outside foraging for bugs, munching on their supplied chemical-free grain mix, and just enjoying life.

We currently have a total of 650 hens, 200 in our first flock that arrived in April 2020, and 450 that arrived at the end of August. We run our girls at a maximum stocking density of 30 hens per hectare. Not sure what this means? Read on.

Many commercial egg farms (and meat chicken farms too) have a “free range” stocking density of 10,000 hens per hectare. Some have less than this, many adhering to 1,500 hens per hectare. They do have access to the outdoors but there’s so many hens that they don’t have much space to themselves. They also usually run on the same patch of dirt every day of their lives. Not so here.

Our maximum stocking density of 30 hens per hectare is rotationally grazed, meaning that the hens are in a paddock that is moved around our farm every week (at least) so that they are always on fresh grass with fresh bugs, fresh cow manure (we’re also a working dairy farm!) and fresh scenery to explore. Our stocking density is calculated by dividing our total number of hens by the size of our farm which has 38 hectares of usable space. Currently, our density would be calculated like this: 650 hens / 38ha = 17.1 hens per hectare, but we hope to have 1000 hens early 2021 so we’ve allowed for the expansion by stating 30 hens per hectare.

We believe in giving our chickens the best, so they have access to fresh pasture all day, every day, whilst also having the freedom to shelter in their cosy caravans (built by Chris Murphy, the band manager of INXS, no less!) with insulated walls, plenty of ventilation, ample roosting space and oodles of room for them to comfortably lay their eggs.

Each day we collect the eggs onto trays and bring them back to our cool storage to be packed and delivered to our customers within days of being laid, sometimes even the same day! You can’t get any fresher than that.

On top of what they find out in the paddocks, our hens are provided the best quality feed mix consisting mostly of rolled wheat, barley and maize, and a selection of peas, lupins, soybean meal and canola meal added in to balance out the diet. To make sure the hens are in the best of health, they’ll also get a mix of limestone, dicalcium phosphate, salt and sodium bicarbonate, along with other minerals, vitamins and feed enzymes to aid their digestive systems. Small amounts of marigold and paprika are added in too for the best looking yolks you’ll ever eat. Our feed has no nasties in it like meat-meal or artificial yolk colourings, only the ingredients listed above so that you can be sure our eggs are the best you can get.
